Overview
Teachers qualified to teach mathematics are in very short supply across Australia. This short course enables out-of-field mathematics teachers to deliver teaching programs and activities to support students’ mathematics and numeracy success.
Designed for current secondary teachers of Years 7–10 and primary teachers, the Professional Certificate in Teaching Mathematics (Out-of-field Teachers) is a 192-hour course over 12 weeks, comprising approximately eight hours of workplace learning, six hours of self-access learning and one hour engagement with a mentor each week.
The course has been developed in partnership with Mathematics Association of NSW and the Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers. This course may be a pathway to further study, providing 24 credit points towards the Graduate Certificate in Education (Professional Learning).
This course is supported with Commonwealth funding for a micro-credential pilot program. This grant provides the funds for 60 students for the first offering of this course, set for March 2024. FEE-HELP is also available for this course. Students who satisfy the requirements of the course receive a Certificate of Attainment and a digital micro-credential badge.
Applicants must be an Australian resident and currently employed as a registered teacher in a Primary or Secondary classroom setting in any of the Australian educational jurisdictions.
Letter of employment and evidence of registration is required.

Course Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a course. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes (GA).

Career Outcomes

Completing Teaching Mathematics for Out-Of-Field Teachers I will contribute 5 hours of NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Accredited PD in the priority area of Delivery and assessment of NSW Curriculum/Early Years Learning Framework addressing Standard Descriptor(s) 1.2.2, 2.1.2 and 3.2.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher in NSW.

English language requirements apply to International applicants and other applicants whose previous study was undertaken in a language other than English. The minimum English language requirements for such applicants for entry to this course are as follows
Course requirements
The attendance and participation requirements to successfully complete the course include:
- Six online Tutorials (2 hours every second week)
- Workplace learning (approx. 8 hrs per week)
- Self-access learning materials (approx. 6 hrs per week)
- Networking and mentoring support (approx. 1 hour per week)
Note. The professional certificate consists of six modules, with each module having a duration of two weeks.
In addition, students must complete all assessment items to a satisfactory standard.

Domestic students
You are a domestic student if you are an Australian citizen or permanent resident, New Zealand citizen, or Australian humanitarian visa holder. Your course will either be a Commonwealth Supported Place or a full fee-paying place. This is noted in the course snapshot.
Commonwealth Supported Places:
In a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP), the Government pays some of your fees and you pay the rest as the Student Contribution Amount (SCA).
SCA is calculated per unit, not per course. Eligible students can defer the SCA through a HECS-HELP loan.
Full Fee-Paying Places:
A full fee-paying place is where you pay the full (unsubsidised) tuition fee for your course. Eligible students can defer the payment of their tuition fees through the FEE-HELP scheme (including employer-reserved places for The Hotel School courses).
