Unit description

This unit equips students to navigate the challenges of clinical practice, communicate effectively with stakeholders, make ethical decisions, and base their practice on the latest scientific evidence. The unit will empower students with the required skills and knowledge to excel in clinical practice, with a strong emphasis on effective communication and evidence-based decision-making.

Unit content

This Professional Practice unit has oversight for the acquisition of skills and knowledge during final year placements to ensure the students have the comprehensive skill set to benefit their patients and enhance their professional standing in the veterinary community. The unit includes:

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

demonstrate proficiency in managing clinical cases independently and with minimal supervision then create differential diagnoses, and prognoses that accurately reflect the patient's condition and are supported by clinical evidence

demonstrate the ability to assess various factors influencing a professional consultation in veterinary practice and effectively design communication content and style to meet the specific needs of each situation

design, and implement treatment and management plans that align with professional ethical standards, are adapted to the context or scenario and result in favourable patient outcomes

produce a best-practice clinic protocol for the management of a common veterinary disease adapted to the available resources through application of the principles of evidence based veterinary medicine.
