Unit description

This unit aims to provide the core competencies in anaesthesia, emergency and intensive care required for veterinary practice. Students will apply their clinical knowledge and skills to gain confidence in the anaesthesia of healthy and diseased animals, and the management of emergency situations and critically ill animals requiring hospitalisation.

Unit content

This placement unit consists of six weeks of clinical placement in veterinary practice in anaesthesia, emergency and critical care including:

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

independently and effectively develop anaesthetic and analgesic protocols suitable for healthy and diseased animals while engaging in reflective practice

demonstrate proficiency in performing general anaesthesia on veterinary patients with minimal supervision

demonstrate proficiency in assessing and triaging animals in emergency situations with minimal supervision

demonstrate proficiency in the monitoring and management of critically ill patients under intensive care while under supervision.
