Unit description

This unit aims to build core competencies in pig, poultry and aquaculture medicine. Students will develop the necessary knowledge and skills to be competent in the diagnosis, treatment, management and prevention of common problems encountered within intensive animal production systems in veterinary practice. Students will also participate in community engaged learning to support knowledge and skill development.

Unit content

Module 1. Common diseases of the cardiovascular, respiratory and lymphatic systems

Module 2. Nutrition and common diseases of the endocrine system

Module 3. Common diseases of the renal, urogenital and reproductive systems

Module 4. Common diseases of the gastrointestinal system

Module 5. Common diseases of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems

Module 6. Common diseases of the cardiovascular, respiratory and lymphatic systems

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

proficiently and confidently discuss common diseases encountered in intensive animal production systems

apply knowledge of diagnostic testing principles to design and apply effective diagnostic testing plans for animals in intensive production systems with medical conditions

formulate therapeutic plans using a logical clinical reasoning framework for intensive production system patients through practical experiences and case-based learning activities

demonstrate effective teamwork and communication skills while participating in a veterinary clinical team in an intensive production system setting.
