Unit description

This unit aims to develop student competency in clinical pharmacology, therapeutics and toxicology in veterinary practice. Students will develop the knowledge and skills required to appropriately select pharmaceuticals for various animal species and to diagnose and manage common toxicities in veterinary practice.

Unit content

Module 1. General principles of veterinary pharmacology, therapeutics and toxicology

Module 2. Responsible antimicrobial usage in veterinary practice

Module 3. Companion animal pharmacology, therapeutics and toxicology

Module 4. Equine pharmacology, therapeutics and toxicology

Module 5. Ruminant pharmacology, therapeutics and toxicology

Module 6. Exotic/Native/Zoo/Wildlife & intensive production system pharmacology, therapeutics and toxicology

Learning outcomes

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

apply knowledge of the commonly used classes of veterinary drugs to identify appropriate drug therapies for specific animal species and conditions while engaging in reflective practice.

demonstrate an understanding of dosage regimens, routes of administration, and considerations for drug interactions or contraindications for commonly used veterinary drugs

apply knowledge of the principles of antimicrobial therapy for selecting and using antimicrobial agents in species common encountered in veterinary practice

apply knowledge of the principles of clinical toxicology for managing toxicological emergencies in veterinary patients.
