Unit description

This unit aims to build competencies in the diagnosis, treatment and management of infectious disease. Students will apply knowledge of microbiology to describe disease and pathogens at the tissue, organ, and whole body levels. They will develop their diagnostic laboratory skills and ability to investigate and manage disease outbreaks.

Unit content

Module 1. General principles of the diagnosis, control and treatment of infectious diseases

Module 2. Common infectious diseases of the companion animal

Module 3. Common infectious diseases of the horse

Module 4. Common infectious diseases of ruminants

Module 5. Common infectious diseases of exotic/native/zoo/wildlife species

Module 6. Common infectious diseases of pigs/poultry

Learning outcomes

apply knowledge of the pathogenesis and epidemiology of infectious diseases for individual animals and animal populations

demonstrate proficiency in designing diagnostic plans and performing testing for infectious diseases through practical experiences and case-based learning

independently and confidently describe the management of infectious diseases in animals while actively engaging in reflective practice

Communicate information on infectious diseases in animals proficiently and professionally in practical and case-based contexts.
