Unit description

This unit provides the essential foundational knowledge of the normal structure and function of the musculoskeletal and locomotion systems in animals commonly encountered in veterinary practice. Students will study microscopic and gross anatomy and will learn about the normal physiological processes across a range of species. This will provide them with the ability to recognise the normal animal body.

Module 2. Diagnostic evaluation of the musculoskeletal and locomotion systems

Module 3. Companion animal and Exotic/Native/Zoo/Wildlife species: musculoskeletal and locomotion systems

Module 4. Equine: musculoskeletal and locomotion systems

Module 5. Ruminant: musculoskeletal and locomotion systems

Module 6. Pig/Poultry/intensive production species: musculoskeletal and locomotion systems

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

apply knowledge of the basic principles of movement in vertebrates to describe and explain the main components of the locomotory system and their adaptations for efficient function

apply knowledge of the normal structure and function of the musculoskeletal and locomotor systems for animals commonly encountered in veterinary practice

apply knowledge of skeletal and muscular relationships for each body region to locate and identify underlying structures during routine clinical examination and procedures, and on diagnostic imaging

apply knowledge on significant muscle groups from different body regions reflecting on their clinical relevance in veterinary practice.
