Unit description

This unit provides core knowledge and skills in the concept of One Health which recognizes that the health of people, animals and the environment is closely connected and inter-related. Students will learn about infectious disease investigation, food safety and public health.

Unit content

Module 1. General principles of population medicine and disease surveillance

Module 2. Exotic animal diseases

Module 3. Food producing animal inspection and procedures

Module 4. Food safety, zoonotic diseases and public health

Module 5. One Health principles

Module 6. Eco health/conservation medicine

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

apply knowledge of evaluating and managing the health of animal populations to assess, monitor, and implement effective strategies for population health management

apply knowledge of exotic diseases of animals and their control to effectively identify and explain the response to, and management of these diseases in veterinary practice

apply knowledge of the ante mortem, slaughtering, and post mortem inspection procedures in food-producing animals and the principles of food safety

promote OneHealth principles through reflective practice and the application of knowledge on the interrelatedness of veterinary medicine with human health, environmental health, and sustainability.
