Unit description

Students participate in 96hrs of work integrated learning for up to 12 weeks to demonstrate, with a low level of support, competence in assessment of, and intervention for, adults presenting with communication and swallowing concerns. Students apply clinical reasoning, professional and interdisciplinary skills to a range of client presentations from diverse service delivery and care settings.

1. Assessment and analysis of voice disorders in adults and children
2. Intervention and management of voice disorders in adults and children
3. AAC for adults with diverse communication needs
4. Complex cases – neurodegenerative conditions and palliative care
5. Complex cases – cancer care
6. Complex cases – working as part of a multidisciplinary team

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

discuss assessment and analysis approaches to adults with diverse communication and/or swallowing needs using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health Framework and other models

discuss intervention plans and demonstrate their application for adults with diverse communication and/or swallowing needs using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health Framework and other models

demonstrate professional and clinical competence, with low level support, working with clients in a work integrated learning environment
