Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

explain speech sound disorder and developmental language disorder in childhood, including prevalence, impact, associated risk and protective factors and subsequent potential educational and social outcomes

plan assessments of speech, language and literacy to diagnose types of SSD (e.g., phonological impairment, CAS), DLD, and subsequent literacy difficulties considering the child’s cultural, linguistic and social context, family-and-person centered practice, and evidence-based principles

analyse and interpret speech, language and literacy skills of children, considering norms, benchmarks and speech-language sampling analyses to differentiate between typical development, disorder and difference

communicate key information relating to child assessment practices and findings relevant to clinical, early childhood and school settings using accessible language tailored to parents, carers, and other professionals
