Unit description

Introduces students to the key issues and theoretical concepts into the organisation and function of the Australian health care system. Public health approaches and models of health care are explored. Students learn how health is shaped by social, political, environmental, cultural and economic factors, and how that knowledge shapes effective health care. Lastly, health informatics, emerging health technologies and current and future directions in healthcare will be presented.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

identify the structures, funding and models of care within the Australian healthcare system and within the broader context of international healthcare

describe the role of social determinants and health literacy in the health of Australians

cooperatively communicate the impact of various health policies, priorities and frameworks on health promotion and health service delivery in Australia

examine the current and future directions of healthcare within the context of health technologies and global health issues
