There will be a 2-day compulsory residential for Online students that will be held on the Lismore campus or the National Marine Science Centre, Coffs Harbour. There will be a 1-day compulsory residential for on campus (NMSC) students that will be held at the National Marine Science Centre, Coffs Harbour. Unit description

Explores a multidisciplinary approach to major types of chemical, physical, and biological pollutants that impact upon aquatic systems, including marine environments. This unit investigates pathways, fates and effects of these pollutants on aquatic ecosystems and human health. Different approaches to the design of monitoring programs for detecting and techniques for controlling pollutants are examined. Students gain practical skills in sampling techniques and analyses of polluted samples.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. define the different sources of aquatic pollution and evaluate the way different pollutants impact aquatic ecosystems

perform quantitative analysis of pollution and compare against guidelines

synthesise knowledge to define the complex links between catchment management and aquatic pollution

research and present sound scientific information for appropriate audiences.
