Unit of Study HOTL6017 Industry Internship A (2025)

Unit description

Assists students to critically reflect on the relationship between their academic studies and the workplace environment by providing a minimum 300 hours (maximum 450 hours) of practical workplace experience over a dual term period within the larger hospitality environment. This unit enables students to gain an understanding of the requirements of their chosen sector.

Unit content

Students are required to complete an internship of a dual term duration by undertaking productive work at an operational / supervisory level with an appropriate hospitality organisation, in Australia or overseas.

Students are responsible for finding their own internship placement. On finding a position, students must submit a Notice of Placement form to seek approval from the Unit Assessor as to the position's eligibility for an internship, prior to commencing their placement.

Unit Assessor approval is required for the Internship appointment.  In approving the internship, the UA will consider the appropriateness of the internship for a Masters level student.  In particular, the UA will look for evidence of the internship providing novel and challenging opportunities for the student; either in novel operating areas, or roles, or in positions that expose the student to additional supervisory and management responsibilities.

Industry Internship A may be taken immediately prior to taking Industry Internship B with the same employer to form a minimum 600-hour (maximum 900 hour) placement of two x dual terms across the 2 units.
