Unit description

This unit explores the scope of practice for a clinical exercise physiologist working with clients affected by neurological conditions and those with diverse functional abilities. Emphasising the role of exercise in managing conditions and improving functional capacity, the unit builds essential skills in clinical assessment, person-centred care, and multidisciplinary collaboration. Students will develop critical reasoning and practical skills for designing and delivering safe, evidence-based exercise interventions, with an inclusive approach tailored to meet the unique needs of individuals across the lifespan, including children with neurological conditions or disabilities.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

articulate a comprehensive understanding of neurological conditions, including their diagnosis, treatment, side effects, and implications for exercise capacity and safety, and demonstrate the ability to apply this knowledge in clinical case scenarios

develop and demonstrate assessment skills, exercise programming skills, and clinical reasoning for clients with neurological conditions or diverse functional abilities

apply principles of inclusive practice to design and adapt exercise interventions for clients varying abilities, such as paediatric clients or those with a neurological condition or disability, ensuring accessibility and individualised care

apply the principles of interprofessional practice to address the broader healthcare needs of clients with neurological conditions and diverse functional abilities
