Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

define and calculate load actions and frictional forces acting on bodies in equilibrium

apply engineering analysis methods to determine internal forces in simple structures or structural members and draw internal force diagrams

define and calculate sectional properties, internal stresses and strains in solid materials

analyse the behaviours of structural members under axial load, torsion, bending, shear and combined loadings

draw free body diagrams and apply equilibrium equations to determine unknown reaction forces

calculate normal and shear stresses on inclined sections, determine principal stresses, maximum shear stresses, and their orientations using stress transformation equations and Mohr's circle.
