Unit description

This unit provides the student with an overall understanding of database concepts and theory. Students will learn how to design and build a database, from data analysis to mapping a specific database model. Both the relational and non-relational models are introduced, along with the use of common structured queried language (SQL) queries for accessing databases in the cloud. Microsoft Azure will be used to familiarise students with developing and implementing databases in the cloud, and using data analytics, as well as preparation for the Microsoft Azure Data Fundamentals certification exam.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

apply core data concepts and identify considerations for working with relational and non-relational data

demonstrate knowledge of writing and executing SQL queries for relational databases

create a database in the cloud and optimise its functionality

apply and evaluate cloud-based data services including analytics for relational and non-relational data solutions.
