Unit description

Extends students’ knowledge of the pathophysiological and clinical aspects of disease with respect to haematological changes. Students will further develop investigative and analytical skills for a range of haematological and haemostatic disorders.

Unit content

Molecular diagnostics in haematopathology; Bone marrow characteristics and evaluation; Examination of body fluids
Malignant leukocyte disorders: evaluation and diagnosis
Lymphomas: evaluation and diagnosis; Myelodysplastic syndromes evaluation and diagnosis
Haemorrhagic coagulation disorders and laboratory investigations; platelet disorders and laboratory investigations
Malaria and other red blood cell inclusions
Paediatric and geriatric haematology

Learning outcomes

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

evaluate the processes involved in the diagnosis of blood cell disorders

compare and report a range of blood cell disorders, including discussions of their causes and clinical diagnoses

solve complex clinical cases by using haematological methods

select and employ modern haematology laboratory methods and safe practices for the investigation of haematological and haemostatic disorders
