As Southern Cross University was established by a New South Wales Act (the Southern Cross University Act 1993 (NSW)), the University and its staff members are subject to certain pieces of New South Wales legislation (e.g. the Privacy and Personal Information Protection Act 1998 (NSW)) and associated oversight bodies (e.g. the NSW Information Commissioner) regardless of the geographical region in which the University is operating. Other laws, for example liquor laws and laws relating to residential tenancies, apply based on the State in which the activity is taking place.
