Unit description

This unit builds on existing language proficiency in reading, writing, speaking and listening, focusing on language proficiency in business contexts. It helps to prepare students for the direct entry English for Academic Purposes pathway units, which require SCU Language Test levels of 5.5 (CEFR B2) on entry and lead to undergraduate business, accounting and tourism courses. This unit focuses on developing students' language skills and academic and digital literacy practices. These practices include accessing, assessing and disseminating information online; using an LMS; using similarity detection software; note taking; giving presentations; and a range of academic writing practices (e.g. paraphrasing, referencing) commonly used in business.

 

Enrolment information

This unit is normally offered in 10 week blocks throughout the year.

English Language requirements

To enrol in this unit students must have an English language proficiency comparable to Academic IELTS 5.0 with no band less than 4.5.

  • Academic discourse markers and cohesive structures
  • Maintaining conversations and giving presentations;
  • Listening and reading for information in business contexts
  • Varieties of English including written academic English and online informal English;
  • Academic writing genres suitable for business contexts (reports, emails, blogs)
