From creating joyful environments to strong governance frameworks, a two-day conference on Queensland’s Gold Coast will focus on the vitally important field of early childhood development.
The 'Waves of Wisdom Early Childhood Research Conference’ will be held at Southern Cross University’s Gold Coast Campus on May 1-2.
University Chair of Discipline (Early Childhood Education and Care) Professor Wendy Boyd said the gathering would provide insights into a complex and ever-changing field.
“Research conferences and professional development opportunities in our field tend to be held in metropolitan areas with high costs, which can be a real barrier for people to attend,” she said.
“We’ve set out to provide a conference which is accessible to South-East Queensland and Northern New South Wales – and further afield - with a program which is of a national calibre.”
Southern Cross is a leader in early childhood development and education due to the strength of its Early Years Research Lab. Research by Lab experts informs how the University’s Faculty of Education prepares future early childhood graduates, ensuring they are distinctive and well equipped for the role.
“Waves of Wisdom has been framed for researchers to share insights and perspectives, for early childhood centre operators and leaders, policymakers, and for educators themselves,” Professor Boyd said. “We would love to have some of our alumni in the room.
“Importantly, it’s a chance for the everyone to come together and grow a passionate, supportive professional network across each of those groups.”

Professor Boyd said topics across the two days would include children as a partner in learning, assessment, approaches to teaching and nature-based teaching, through to the implications of AI in early education.
“We know the world is changing at breakneck speed, both technologically and socially,” Professor Boyd said.
“It’s why research on these vital early years is so important, to ensure how and what we are teaching keeps pace with those changes.
“Whether you are someone with deep experience in the field or a recent graduate, Waves of Wisdom is chance to be part of conversations which are at the cutting edge of what we know about supporting early childhood development.
