We talk to Masters by Research student Elisabete Oliveira about her research into Psilocybe mushrooms and Parkinson’s Disease as a possible new frontier in precision medicine.
Elisabete Olivieira began her career as a veterinarian in her home country of Brazil. After relocating to Australia, she made a significant career shift into Biomedical Science, moving from animal health to focus on human health.
This transition broadened her understanding of the human body and its complex systems, and developed her keen interest in integrative healthcare. Her exploration of holistic and traditional medicine led to India, where Elisabete studied Ayurvedic medicine and healing therapies. This experience deepened her respect for ancient practices that view the body, mind, and spirit as one. She began to combine these Ayurvedic principles with modern scientific principles.
During her undergraduate studies in Biomedical Science at Southern Cross University, Elisabete participated in a summer scholarship program, where she collaborated with Dr Andrea Bugarcic from the National Centre for Naturopathic Medicine (NCNM) on cutting-edge naturopathic research, investigating Psilocybe mushroom extracts in the treatment of Parkinson’s Disease.
Now pursuing a Masters research degree at the University, we spoke to Elisabete about her experience as a Higher Degree Research student and what she is hoping to achieve.
What motivated you to pursue a Masters by Thesis at Southern Cross?
I have always been fascinated by the potential of psychedelic medicine, both for its therapeutic benefits and its emerging applications in healthcare. This interest, combined with my academic background in biomedical science and exposure to research at NCNM, inspired me to pursue a Masters. I saw it as an opportunity to delve deeper into the field and contribute through a research-focused thesis. Unlike research into the use of regulated therapies, our research is focused on a specific branch of psychedelics, distinct from mental health applications. We are investigating their potential in neurodegenerative conditions, specifically looking at cellular regeneration. Our goal is to explore alternative prevention and treatment strategies for neurodegenerative diseases, with a particular emphasis on Parkinson’s.
What has been your most challenging aspect of the course?
The most challenging aspect of the Masters has been managing the intricacies of lab assays, particularly troubleshooting experiments when unexpected results arise. These processes require meticulous attention to detail, critical thinking, and patience. It’s a rewarding challenge though, as each problem-solving opportunity contributes to a deeper understanding of the methodologies and the scientific principles underlying the research.

My name is Elizabeth Oliveira. My research is about psilocybin containing mushrooms as a prospective therapeutics for Parkinson's disease. I've always been fascinated by psychedelic medicine and the transformative power of this natural substances, and what inspired me to pursue. A research degree was to study the science behind it, and what contribution could I give to the scientific validation of these natural psychedelics in therapeutic benefits and treating conditions.
I participated in one of the summer scholarship programs. Uh, during my Bachelor and I was fortunate to meet my supervisors and work with them and their approach to natural medicine really resonated with me. And I see the National Center for Naturopathic Medicine as a place where. The synergy between nature and science is truly cultivated and respected.
I hope my research will contribute to a growing body of knowledge to support the use of these natural psychedelics. I. And my goal is to provide evidence that these mushrooms, the natural mushrooms, can have more benefits than isolated compounds like synthetic psilocybin, for example, and to help establish a foundation for the safe and effective use of this natural psychedelics for treating conditions like, Parkinson's disease, for example.
What aspects of naturopathic medicine excite you the most?
What excites me the most about naturopathic medicine is its integrative approach to health, combining evidence-based practices with a holistic focus on the mind-body connection. I am particularly inspired by the growing potential to bring psychedelic medicine into this space. The possibility of exploring and incorporating these therapies as part of a naturopathic framework opens up transformative opportunities for mental health and overall well-being.
How do you see yourself using the skills and knowledge you have gained in your practice/career?
The skills and knowledge I have gained from this course will serve as a foundation for advancing my career, particularly in psychedelic medicine. The hands-on experience with lab assays and experimental troubleshooting has equipped me with strong research skills, which I plan to contribute to evidence-based approaches in this emerging field.
How has your experience been studying at Southern Cross University?
My experience at Southern Cross University has been amazing. The supportive environment, resources, and passionate faculty have made this journey rewarding. I’ve not only gained knowledge and skills but have also formed meaningful connections with peers and mentors. Southern Cross feels like a second home, providing a space where I’ve grown personally and professionally. Being part of such an inspiring and innovative academic community has been a privilege.
Why did you choose to study at Southern Cross?
I chose to study at Southern Cross because of its easy accessibility and proximity to home, which made it a convenient choice for balancing my personal and academic life. Beyond that, the University offers a cosy and welcoming environment. The supportive atmosphere, combined with the reputation for innovative programs and a strong focus on research, made it the perfect place for me to pursue my academic goals.
What would you say to other healthcare professionals who are undecided about postgraduate studies in Advanced Naturopathic Medicine or Naturopathic Medicine?
Find a topic that inspires and motivates you—it makes all the difference. Postgraduate studies can be challenging, but being passionate about the subject drives you to overcome obstacles and fully immerse yourself in the learning process. Naturopathic Medicine offers incredible opportunities to explore innovative approaches to health and make a meaningful impact in the field. If you’re drawn to holistic, evidence-based care and want to push healthcare boundaries, this could be the perfect path for you.
Please note: The only permitted use of psilocybin in Australia is as a prescription-only medicine by authorised psychiatrists under strict conditions. Further information on psilocybin can be found at Re-scheduling of psilocybin and MDMA in the Poisons Standard: questions and answers.
The National Centre for Naturopathic Medicine at Southern Cross University is an internationally recognised centre of excellence and innovation in naturopathic medicine, health education, research and practice. NCNM creates, promotes and advocates a strong culture of incorporating evidence-based science into naturopathic education and clinical practice.
