Stellar panel to share secrets of breaking into the screen and media industry

‘Breaking into the Screen and Media Industries’ will be hosted on zoom on July 24, with budding creatives across the country invited to tune in.

Multi-award-winning filmmaker Jocelyn Moorhouse of The Dressmaker fame will be joined on the all-star panel by screenwriter, director and producer Stuart Beattie (Pirates of the Caribbean and Collateral), multi-award-winning screen composer Caitlin Yeo (Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan) and Emmy award-winning creator and Ludo Studio co-founder Daley Pearson (Bluey).

Facilitating the panel is Northern Rivers based producer and Screenworks founding member Lois Randall (Grace Beside Me).

"Screenworks is delighted to bring this calibre of highly-accomplished industry guest speakers to talk about their careers and working in the screen and media industries,” said Screenworks CEO, Ken Crouch.

“Through this Screenworks and Southern Cross partnership, we look forward to helping create a bridge for students between studying Screen and Media at university and pursuing a professional career in the industry."

Southern Cross University Associate Professor and media artist Grayson Cooke said the acclaimed line-up was an inspiration to students and early-career practitioners.

“For these sector-leading directors and artists to come together to talk about their career journeys, the work they do and give advice on how to break into the screen and media industry is incredibly valuable for burgeoning film and TV practitioners,” Professor Cooke said.

“Not only will they share stories and advice on possibilities in the screen, media and music industries, they’ll also explain the impact COVID restrictions have had on the industry and where new opportunities are emerging, as well as taking questions from the audience.

“This event was originally planned to be held at Southern Cross University Lismore campus, however, this online format now enables larger scope for early-career filmmakers and musicians around the country to come together and learn from the best.

“It’s a must-attend opportunity for anyone who is interested in composing, writing, film and television production and animation.”

The Screenworks and Southern Cross University panel event will be held on Friday July 24 from 11am to 1pm.

Stuart Beattie is an Australian director, screenwriter, and producer who began his career writing screenplays for Australian independent films, then branched into Hollywood with Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl and the Tom Cruise thriller, Collateral. He followed that with three adaptations: Derailed, starring Clive Owen and Jennifer Aniston; 30 Days of Nights, starring Josh Hartnett and Melissa George; and the 310 To Yuma, starring Russell Crowe and Christian Bale.
He wrote the original screenplay for Baz Lurhmann's epic, Australia, starring Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman, and for Stephen Sommers' blockbuster action film GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra.
Stuart had the chance to direct his own screenplays with the adaptation of the best-selling Australian book, Tomorrow when the War Began, and wrote and directed I, Frankenstein, starring Aaron Eckhart, Bill Nighy, and Yvonne Strahovski. His latest was the acclaimed Australian war drama Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan.
In television, Stuart wrote one of four award-winning episodes of the Australian mini-series, Deadline Gallipoli, starring Sam Worthington, and the pilot and original bible for Showtime’s Halo. In theatre, Stuart wrote the book for Jim Steinman’s smash-hit musical, Bat out of Hell.
 
Caitlin Yeo is an acclaimed, multi-award-winning screen composer. She recently composed the music for Kriv Stender’s latest award-winning feature Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan, composed for Priscilla Cameron’s award-winning The Butterfly Tree, Sally Aitken’s Getting Frank Gehry and collaborated with Amanda Brown on the slow TV documentary The Chocolate Factory. She is currently working on Sally Aitken’s feature documentary Valerie and TV drama series Wakefield for Jungle Entertainment/ABC TV.
Caitlin has also scored multiple feature films, including critically acclaimed The Rocket, cult classic All My Friends are Leaving Brisbane and Standing Up for Sunny. Her documentary work includes Foxtel series, The Pacific in the Wake of Captain Cook with Sam Neill, David Stratton: A Cinematic Life, Bomb Harvest, For the Love of Meat, After the Apology, and ABC TV series The House with Annabel Crabb.
Her stage composition credits including Seven Stories; an audio-visual work performed by Ensemble Offspring, at the City Recital Hall for Vivid 2017, and the arena show Heartland: Australian Outback Spectacular on the Gold Coast.
 
Jocelyn Moorhouse wrote and directed the feature film, The Dressmaker, which starred Kate Winslet, Judy Davis and Liam Hemsworth and premiered at Toronto Film Festival and went on to win multiple awards. After graduating from the Australian Film Television and Radio School in 1984 Jocelyn’s short film Proof starring Hugo Weaving and Russell Crowe premiered in Director’s Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival in 1991 and won multiple awards. In 1994 Jocelyn moved to Los Angeles to direct How to Make an American Quilt starring Winona Ryder and Anne Bancroft, and A Thousand Acres starring Michele Pfeiffer, Jessica Lang and Colin Firth. She works closely with her husband PJ Hogan and was producer on his films Muriels’  Wedding, Unconditional Love, Peter Pan and Mental.
In 2012 she directed her first stage play, Sex with Strangers by Laura Eason, at the Sydney Theatre Company under the artistic directorship of Cate Blanchett and Andrew Upton.
Her TV credits include Wanted for Channel 7/Netflix, Les Norton, and set-up director for Stateless for ABC produced by Tony Ayres and Cate Blanchett. In 2019 her memoir, Unconditional Love was published and she has feature films in development with Sue Maslin and Lucky Chap.
 
Daley Pearson is a writer, director, producer and a multi Emmy-award winning creator and co-founder and director at Ludo Studio. He wrote and directed The Strange Calls, #7DaysLater and the interactive animation series Doodles. Ludio Studio produced one of the highest-rated Children’s TV shows, Bluey, as well as Team Thor with Chris Hemsworth and Team Darryl, where he stars as Thor’s roommate in Marvel Studio’s short-comedy series filmed to publicise the smash-hit film Thor: Ragnarok. He is described by ABC's Head of Comedy as, ‘one of Australia’s greatest comedy-maker discoveries’.
