In mid-2019, Gold Coast resident Mimirose Lorraway decided to pursue her dream of becoming a psychologist and enrolled to study at Southern Cross University.

After years of working in client-centric and service-based roles in the hotel industry, Mimi was always intrigued at understanding the “heart of conversations”.

“In all my interactions, something I genuinely enjoy is getting to that level deeper with people,” the Mermaid Beach resident said.

“Studying psychology seemed like a natural progression as I’ve always been very interested in how people relate to one another and overcome the hurdles, barriers and anxieties life throws at us.”

At age 26 Mimi didn’t let the nerves of returning to study stop her from pursuing her dream.

“In the first two weeks of my degree at Southern Cross, our course coordinator Dr Desiree Kozlowski offered to catch up with students by appointment to see how we were going,” she said.

“That conversation really helped me in terms of how to approach my studies and ultimately how I wanted to chart the course of my study and professional life.

“She has now taught two of my classes and it’s been amazing to have a lecturer who is very conscious of the fact that not everyone is in the same lane and some may need additional assistance, particularly during this time when everything has been transitioned online. She is genuine, authentic and real, and her sense of humour really helps.

“I think it’s great she is offering to mentor students who will be starting their degree fully online mid-year. A lot of people come into studying psychology thinking it might be intimidating, but lifting the veil on that has been really helpful for me.”

Mimi said while its been a challenge to be physically separated from her classmates during COVID restrictions, she has loved the course content and learning about topics she is passionate about and really cares about.

Southern Cross is Australia’s top place to study psychology according to both the latest federal government QILT data and 2020 Good Universities Guide.
