Dive into your dream career at Coffs Harbour Open Day

Want to be an elite sports coach and inspire players to get to the top of their game? Or maybe you want to help people with injury or disability participate more fully in life? What if you could complete your entire marine science degree at the National Marine Science Centre, using the Solitary Islands Marine Park as your classroom?

Come along to Southern Cross University Open Day at Coffs Harbour campus on Friday July 27, from 3pm – 7pm, followed by the National Marine Science Centre and Solitary Islands Aquarium on Saturday July 28, from 10am – 3pm, to discover how we can deliver an educational experience that will open new horizons for you.

Our lecturers, staff and student ambassadors will come together at Open Day to answer all your questions and showcase our study options, unique campus features and the possibilities of where a Southern Cross University degree can take you.

From 2019 Coffs Harbour will offer the Bachelor of Exercise Science and Psychological Science degree, with application in elite sport psychology and careers that promote health and self-esteem through a healthy lifestyle.

The Open Day presentation ‘Handling the Heat: Preparations and competition strategies to maximise athletic performance’ will be presented by triathlete Dr Chris Stevens, one of our top academics in the exercise science program. Session: 6.30pm Friday July 27 in Room D3.50, D Block.

The Bachelor of Occupational Therapy, already available at our Gold Coast campus, will also be offered at Coffs Harbour campus from Session 1 2019.

Open Day guests can try their hand at remodelling a bathroom to make it accessible for a person using wheeled mobility. This life-size bathroom and other ergonomic design equipment will be set up in a stall in the Gathering Space. Session: Friday July 27, 3pm – 7pm. Open Day guests can also find out what physical shape they’re in with a free five-minute health check in the Health Truck until 6.30pm.

From next year, Southern Cross University will offer its flagship Bachelor of Marine Science and Management at the National Marine Science Centre, providing opportunities for locals to complete their entire degree in Coffs Harbour using the Solitary Islands Marine Park as their classroom.

During Open Day, Professor Steve Smith, Director of the National Marine Science Centre will present ‘Coffs Coast: The best classroom in the world!’ sharing the exciting research and learning opportunities available to students at our showcase facility, Session: 5.45pm Friday July 27 in Room D3.50, D Block.

Southern Cross University recently launched the online Master and Graduate Diploma courses in both Mental Health and Mental Health Nursing, with shorter ‘Study Period’ intakes in August and October. From August, Registered Nurses can study the Graduate Certificate in Primary Healthcare Nursing online, with application in healthcare leadership.

Dr John Hurley will present his research in the mental health space with a Careers in Mental Health Nursing presentation entitled ‘The Science and Values of Mental Health Nursing’, followed by ‘Is that psychology?’ with Dr Desiree Kozlowski, athletic competition strategies with Dr Chris Stevens, and information sessions on psychological science, nursing and midwifery and options in health sciences. Aspiring writers can study the Graduate Diploma of Creative Writing online part-time over two years, with the new postgraduate course now available online.

Open Day guests can attend the highly anticipated book launch of ‘Out of the Forest’ by Southern Cross University’s Dr Gregory P Smith from the School of Arts and Social Sciences, held in the Library from 5.45pm – 7pm, Friday July 27.

From an abusive childhood to living as a homeless alcoholic, Gregory P Smith decided one day he’d had enough and retreated from the world to live in the bush. Emerging a decade later, an epiphany set Gregory on the path of learning. These days he teaches social science at Southern Cross after earning three degrees here – Bachelor of Social Science, Bachelor of Social Science with Honours and PhD. Meet Dr Gregory P Smith when he launches his remarkable autobiography ‘Out of the Forest’ published by Penguin Australia.

Other Open Day highlights include tours of the campus, facilities and laboratories, presentations to help with applying for and transitioning to university, including: Getting into University, including Entry Requirements and Pathways; de-mystifying University with the ‘Southern Cross Mythbusters’; Parents’ Guide to Southern Cross University.

Alongside Open Day activities there will be Twilight markets from 3pm – 7pm in the courtyard, featuring local food, arts and crafts and music from local musicians D’Boyzos.
