With a fine layer of orange dust now coating exposed surfaces across the region following a massive dust storm, there’s a lot of talk about cleaning and washing, said Southern Cross University Environmental Sustainability Officer, Kirsty Howton.
She advises that before you tackle your car, windows, clothes and other affected items, please consider the following actions to reduce the environmental impact of your cleaning now and into the future:
• use a bucket to wash your car on the lawn; or go to a car wash that recycles the water;
• wash clothes and other fabrics such as curtains in a cold wash and only when the load is full; and
• for some more cheap, safe and effective ‘green’ cleaning recipes and tips for the car, living room, laundry and kitchen, download the brochure from the Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water at www.epa.nsw.gov.au/managewaste/at-home.htm
