Craig Foster to share his wisdom with students

Former Socceroo’s captain, SBS sports presenter and chief football analyst, Craig Foster, has an inspiring message for Southern Cross University students.

Craig will be the guest speaker at a special presentation being held for ‘Beat the Stress Week’ - part of the University’s month-long orientation program - in the Whitebrook Theatre (Y-block) on the Lismore campus this Thursday, March 12, at 12pm.

“I want to share the kind of insight and knowledge that I wished someone had shared with me when I was in my youth,” said Craig.

“I turn 40 this year and being asked to do this presentation has made me look back over the years and really think hard about the things that made a difference to my success and my achievement in two different careers - both as an international sportsman and in the media industry.

“I believe there are certain basic principles of achievement that, if followed, can lead to success. These are things I have learned over the past 20 years and I hope they might be of benefit to others.

“But for me the emphasis should be on personal excellence and fulfilment rather than in seeking to achieve success in the eyes of the world. I don’t think you should seek society’s approval or acceptance but rather focus on what is personally of value and importance to you. The internal outcomes are far more important than the external outcomes.”

Craig said he would also speak about the importance of education and how to balance study commitments with daily living and personal happiness and how to plan for the transition into the workforce.

Members of the public are also invited to attend the lecture.

Prior to speaking at Southern Cross University Craig will address senior students at both Trinity Catholic College, Lismore and Kadina High School, Goonellabah.

Craig has been the driving force in the establishment of a proposal to make the Far North Coast region a world centre of excellence for football. A steering committee headed by Member for Page, Janelle Saffin, and involving Southern Cross University as one of the key stakeholders, has already been formed to help develop the Asia Pacific Football Institute.

Dr Dave Arthur, Southern Cross University’s representative on the committee and senior lecturer in sport business in the Graduate College of Management, said the proposal would help put the region on the international football map and many of those who came to learn the game here would benefit from the University’s leadership in the fields of sport management, exercise science, law, business and education.

“We have already met with all tiers of government and received wholesale support for the concept. We are now looking to secure funding for a comprehensive feasibility analysis to be conducted by the Graduate College,” Dr Arthur said.
