Artists working in tandem

A combined Lismore TAFE and Southern Cross University visual arts student exhibition titled Tandem10 opened yesterday in Lismore.

“We’re very excited about the collaboration and see it as a way of forging stronger ties between the two institutions as we celebrate the talents of our artistic community,” said Southern Cross University visual arts lecturer Leonie Lane.

“We have a lot of excellent students coming in to our program from TAFE who are very worthy of the advance standing they get for our Bachelor of Visual Arts course.”

TAFE Lismore’s Fine Arts teacher Michael Cusack said both institutions hoped that the exhibition would be a forerunner for further artistic collaboration.

“Ours is a small artistic community in the Northern Rivers,” he said. “We are all practicing artists with common interests who can learn from each other through the process of exhibiting. It’s all about making the art experience more inclusive.”

The exhibition will showcase the works of five students from TAFE’s Fine Arts, Ceramics and Aboriginal Studies courses and five students graduating from Southern Cross University’s visual arts course. It includes sculptures, paintings and works on paper, including traditional print-making and digital printing.

The featured artists are Amy Campbell, Jude Crawford, Daphne Dux, Suzy Gourley, Madeleine Jones, Janine Hardaker, Liz McLeod, Michael Moynihan, Vanessa Wallace and John Walters.

The exhibition will be held at the SPACE Gallery on the Lismore TAFE campus in Conway Street, Lismore, from Tuesday, February 19, until Friday March 3. It will be officially opened by Associate Professor Jan Davis, Southern Cross University Bachelor of Visual Arts course co-ordinator and John Stewart, TAFE Lismore head teacher in arts and media on Wednesday, February 27, at 5pm.
