Nursing student Emma Youngberry, of Lismore, is gearing up for one of the biggest events on the Southern Cross University social calendar – the SCU Race Day at the Lismore Turf Club on Saturday, May 5.

This year’s event is being organised by the Office of Sport and Cultural Activities (OSCA) and will include a range of entertainment from a ‘horse and jockey race’ to tug-of-war and the popular fashions on the field.

Emma said she loved going to the races because: “It’s a great excuse to dress up, wear a hat and have fun with your mates. I wouldn’t miss it for anything and there are plenty of buses running between the Uni and the racetrack all day for ticket holders, so you don’t have to worry about drinking and driving.”

Student affairs officer and Race Day co-ordinator, Ann-Maree Wilkinson, said about 1000 students and staff from all three campuses in Lismore, Coffs Harbour and Tweed Gold Coast, would be attending the Race Day. Shuttle buses will transport students and staff from the University to the racetrack and will run all day, with the first bus leaving the Campus Central bus stop at 11.30am.

“It’s one of the biggest combined events for staff and students. It’s a great day to dress up and take part in an activity outside of the University. We also welcome members of the public,” Ms Wilkinson said.

“We’re very pleased to be supporting the Lismore Turf Club, which includes the Race Day as part of their annual racing calendar.”

Prizes will be on offer for the best dressed male, best hat and best dressed female.

Emma’s fashion advice is to go for a stylish and sophisticated look and don’t forget the matching accessories. Her Race Day hot horse tip: ‘pick a number you like!’

Staff and student tickets are $10 which includes return transport and entry, a barbecue lunch and refreshments throughout the day. Buy your tickets from the Unibar this week. Registration forms for fashions on the field, the tug-of-war team event and the horse and jockey piggy-back race are available from the website:
