Environment on the agenda at Southern Cross University

Coastal pollution, Japanese whaling, climate change, sustainable forestry and resource management will be among the topics up for discussion when the new Member for Page meets with Southern Cross University researchers at the Lismore campus tomorrow (December 14).

Janelle Saffin will receive a briefing on a range of environmental issues impacting on the North Coast from academic staff in the School of Environmental Science and Management.

Ms Saffin will also meet with the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Paul Clark, who will provide an update on the University’s research and teaching activities and issues impacting on the higher education sector.

Head of the School of Environmental Science and Management, Professor Jerry Vanclay, said the briefing would provide an overview of the work being done in the School, which has been recognised through the national Learning and Teaching Performance Fund for excellence in teaching. Prospective students who are considering study in this area have also been invited to attend the briefing and tour the University’s facilities.

“We have a strong focus on developing sustainable environments and we work closely with business, government and community organisations to find innovative solutions to many of the environmental issues we are now facing. We also aim to play a key role in the development of policy,” Professor Vanclay said.

“Our research activities are diverse, ranging from resource management, to climate change, marine science and sustainable forestry - all of which are highly relevant to the North Coast region.

“We also play a leading role in research that is significant nationally and internationally. We see this meeting with the new Member for Page as a great opportunity to highlight the incredible work being done within this region, both at the University and in the community.”

Ms Saffin, who is herself a graduate of the Northern Rivers College of Advanced Education (which became Southern Cross University in 1994), said it was vital to utilise the University’s resources.

“It’s hugely important for this region. The University has a range of expertise which we can utilise in areas that are of concern to us, such as climate change, water and landcare. I’m looking forward to the opportunity to hear what is on offer and explore opportunities for community collaboration,” Ms Saffin said.
