SCU TECHNOLOGY PARK TO BROADEN ITS SCOPE

The Southern Cross University Business Precinct - formerly known as Cellulose Valley Technology Park - has undergone a name change reflecting the enhanced scope of its research and development commitment to regional business initiatives.
Explaining that the Precinct was still working closely with the natural plant industry, which was its original focus, SCU's Pro Vice-Chancellor (Enterprise and International), Professor Angela Delves, said the project also had a unique ability to service the specialised requirements of more diverse businesses.
Professor Delves added, "Consistent with SCU's acknowledged expertise in phytochemistry, plant genetics and complementary medicine, the project will certainly continue to work in these fields. But it will also act as a gateway between the University and all key industries in the Northern Rivers region, both present and prospective.
"To advance this agenda, SCU will soon commence work on an Innovation Centre that will house a business incubator receiving funding of $500,000 from the Department of Employment, Workplace Relations and Small Business".
Earlier this year, $500,000 for infrastructure development was committed to the park by the NSW Department of State and Regional Development.
The Precinct's Business Development Manager, Ms Margaret McNeil, explained that the incubator would offer essential business support for start-up and early-stage companies seeking to establish themselves in the Northern Rivers, one of regional Australia's most exciting and creative areas.
"Designs by the prominent architectural firm Stutchbury and Pape of Brisbane have been selected for the project, and the facility will provide the university with an outstanding show case for participants' R& D activities. The Innovation Centre will also house government tenants, local industry associations and professionals seeking quality office space".
A range of tenants has already committed to the project, while further lots are available to companies for long-term lease.
