Welcome to the Faculty of Business, Law and Arts
Overview
Business with purpose, law with a difference, humanities and social science to change your life, and creative arts that truly inspire - four dynamic disciplines of the University under one roof. Our cohabitation has many advantages. We are able to approach a range of issues from completely different perspectives, not only within the Faculty but across the University.
We can combine our business acumen with a mission to deliver better healthcare, our legal expertise with ambitious engineering, social and cultural understanding with education, or our creative production with IT or sustainable living.
We are deeply invested in solving regional problems such as the creation of employment, the development of local industries, the protection of our communities and the enrichment of our cultural lives. The strong foundation of this purpose nurtures students as global citizens, with the skills and potential to contribute not only to their local communities but to human enterprise worldwide.
Welcome to the Faculty of Business, Laws and Arts by Professor Mike Ewing, Executive Dean
Professor Mike Ewing Executive Dean, Faculty of Business, Law and Arts
We're small, we're a community and we care, and it shows. Having a low student/staff ratio and a small class size, students are more prepared to speak up, they feel safer, they're more engaged. It's definitely a superior learning environment. Our academics are committed to the institution.
They're committed to students and they're committed to their profession. Within the business discipline at Southern Cross we believe that there's more to life than shareholders and returning a profit, that organisations need to strike a balance between shareholders, employees, customers, stakeholders, society at large and the environment. It's an empirical fact that students that have had workplace learning or industry-based learning are more employable.
Our students will have had more placement, more industry-based learning. Thanks to the Southern Cross Model you can complete the Law degree in three years. Our second big differentiator is our local focus, so we're very much embedded in the communities on the Gold Coast and in the Northern Rivers.
The majority of our Law graduates end up contributing to the local community. Right now, we're in love with artificial intelligence, we're in love with big data and technology. Reason is good but you need emotion. Technology is good but you need people. I see a very important role for the Humanities disciplines going forward. [Music]
