Prior learning recognised

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) can occur for all units within this course for related:

  • Formal learning — learning gained through study in a structured, accredited program that leads to full or partial achievement of a qualification; and/or
  • Non-formal learning — learning gained through study in a structured, non-accredited program (such as a short course, seminar, or professional development) that does NOT lead to a qualification; and/or
  • Informal learning — learning gained through years of paid or voluntary experience, professional standing or performance.

Credit thresholds

The following credit thresholds apply:

  • 6 units (72 Credit Points) is normally awarded for completion of a related Australian Graduate Diploma, or equivalent;
  • 4 units (48 Credit Points) is normally awarded for completion of a related Australian Graduate Certificate, or equivalent.

Less credit applies for completion of a partially-related Australian postgraduate qualification, or equivalent. Partially related fields include Business administration, Management, IT, Governance, etc.

Related fields of prior learning

Apply for RPL for core units if your postgraduate prior learning relates to:
Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK), including terminology, principles, planning, processes, practices, lifecycles, tailoring and delivering value. Project documentation and communication strategies, scoping and planning projects and evaluating the project management lifecycle against goals, capabilities and needs. Quality assurance, performance controls, project cost management, risk assessment and management.
Ethical conduct and decision-making and evaluation of leadership styles for managing organisational culture, politics, projects and people. Project procurement and negotiation of legal, financial and technical components of contracts. Linking organisational and project strategies, portfolio and program management and mapping process and system requirements for complex projects.
PMO leadership (planning, coordination, methodology, resourcing, tracking, documenting and governance) and using Agile in hybridised project management Evidence based, quantitative or qualitative research for project, program or portfolio management. Contributing to the ongoing improvement of project knowledge and skills eg presentations at project-related conferences, and contribution to the development of national or global standards.

Recognition of Professional certification

Below are examples of project management professionals’ certifications or credentials that will be considered for maximising credit transfer, in conjunction with other qualifications, professional development and at least 8 years industry experience developing complex skillsets at senior practitioner levels:

Australian Institute of Project Management (AIPM) credentials

  • Certified Practising Project Director (CPPD)
  • Certified Practising Portfolio Executive (CPPE)
  • Certified Practising Project Sponsor (CPPS)
  • Chartered Project Professional (ChPP)

While professional certification or credentials such as the Project Management Professional Certification Program (PMP) and the Certified Practising Project Manager(CPPM) are well regarded, on their own they do not qualify for award of credit as their underpinning level of learning does not equate with postgraduate AQF level 8 specifications, or higher learning.

Currency

If your prior study, experience or credentials occurred more than five years ago, you should provide supporting documents to demonstrate the ways you have generated and maintained currency of practice, due to more recent and ongoing learning in a relevant field, such as professional memberships with peak bodies, on-the-job training, professional development or research.

It is important to apply as early as possible using the SCU online Application for Admission. Select the Master of Project Management from the drop-down course list and click APPLY.

Register or log in. In the Advanced Standing section, indicate that you wish to be considered for credit, by selecting yes from the drop-down box.

Unless prior study was completed at Southern Cross, you must attach supporting documents to verify your prior learning.

Your portfolio of evidence for experience

For information on the minimum years of full-time equivalent paid/voluntary experience at ANZSCO Skill level 1 or 2 that is required to be granted credit for informal learning (work experience), see Schedule 1 of Advanced Standing and Recognition of Prior Learning Procedures.

Read the Portfolio of Evidence for Experience - Guidelines which will help you use the Portfolio of Evidence for Experience - Form to describe and provide evidence of how your knowledge, skills and experience gained on-the-job meet unit learning and assessment outcomes.

The supporting documents you submit must include:

  • A current resume or curriculum vitae detailing past and current experiences (including dates and hours of service) for the positions or roles you have held; plus
  • Other primary and secondary evidence, including personal, workplace and third party information from the list of supporting documents for verifying professional experience and expertise.

After you’ve applied

The outcome will be emailed to you within 3 working days of receiving your application unless further clarification or supporting documents are required, in which case we will contact you.

Your right to an appeal

If you disagree with the outcome, you may appeal within ten working days of the credit decision. The appeal will be commenced within ten working days and should take no longer than ten working days for an outcome to be reached. Within this time you may be invited to participate in an interview and/or offered an alternative means of establishing the level of your existing skills and knowledge, such as a challenge test or special project.

You will receive notification about the outcome of the appeal as soon as possible. If the decision-maker is the Course Coordinator, any appeal is to the Pro Vice Chancellor, (Academic Quality) and their decision is final. If the decision-maker is the Pro Vice Chancellor, (Academic Quality), any appeal is to the Chair of Academic Board and their decision is final. Any student not satisfied with the outcome may appeal externally to the relevant Ombudsmen Office.

Exit award thresholds

Unless your prior learning occurred at SCU, if you exit with the Graduate Diploma of Project Management or the Graduate Certificate of Project Management, any credit greater than 4 units (48 Credit Points) or 2 units (12 Credit Points) respectively, will be rescinded (withdrawn).
