Biography

Dr Janet Schloss has a background as a naturopath and clinical nutritionist and completed her Phd at School of Medicine, University of Queensland. Janet has worked extensively conducting clinical trials, particularly contract research at the University of Queensland, the Mater Hospital, the Princess Alexandra hospital, the Office of Research at the Endeavour College of Natural Health and now with the National Centre for Naturopathic Medicine. In addition, Janet has a private practice seeing patients for over 20 years.

Research

Dr Schloss has been working as a researcher for 10 years, mainly conducting clinical trials through contract research. She has extensive knowledge on trial design, trial implementation, quantitative and qualitative research, in conjunction with extensive industry knowledge mainly in Australia. Janet has extensive experience with working with industry partners to conduct well designed clinical trials and works closely with medical specialists, complementary medicine practitioners, allied health and health professionals. In addition, Janet has conducted numerous systematic literature reviews. She regularly presents at conferences in Australia and worldwide and to date has over 50 peer reviewed published journal articles. In 2019, Janet received the NHAA Young Researcher award at the 11th Herbal and Naturopathic International Conference as well as the BIMA Researcher of the Year award in 2017. Janet was the clinical trials manager at the Office of Research at Endeavour College of Natural Health before joining the NCNM centre at SCU.

Community Engagement

Dr Schloss as worked very closely with the community for over 20 years. She is a regular speaker at the Kim Walter's Choice Program since 2004, speaking to patients with cancer. In addition, she was spoken at patient seminars with the Queensland Cancer Association, the oncology clinic at Caboolture Hospital, Breast, head and neck, ovarian and colorectal cancer support groups through the Queensland Cancer Council, Ovarian Cancer Support Group Brisbane, and Be Uplifted Breast Cancer Seminars. In addition, Janet conducts workshops with pilates and physiotherapists on cancer and chronic disease, immune function and aging throughout Australia and in the United States of America. She has also been a key speaker to pharmacists on complementary medicine for diabetes and stress and anxiety. Janet is also an associate editor for two journals.

Supervision

Dr Schloss currently has 1 PhD candidate and 2 honours students who she is supervising. She has been supervising students for 3 years with 5 honours students completing their candidature.

Teaching

Dr Schloss has been involved with teaching naturopathy and nutrition students since 2004. As part of her teaching, she has written course content, been involved with course development and post graduate course content. She also has supervised undergraduate clinics for approximately 10 years. In addition, Dr Schloss taught nutrition to first year medical students for one year.
