Biography
Tobias Kretzschmar is a Professor for plant breeding and genetics in the Faculty of Science and Engineering and co-leads the SCU Harvest to Health Research Impact Cluster.
Prior to joining SCU, he spent seven years at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), Philippines, as Senior Scientist in Molecular Genetics with focus on molecular breeding technologies.
Tobias Kretzschmar has a PhD from the University of Zurich, Switzerland, in Molecular Plant Physiology with a thesis on characterizing plant secondary metabolite transporters.
He received a Diploma in Biology (MSC equivalent) from the Technical University of Kaiserslautern, Germany.
Research
At SCU's Lismore campus, Prof Tobias Kretzschmar’s main research interests focus on the intersect of basic and applied science and the linking of academia with industry, ensuring that research outputs have impact on the region’s agricultural productivity. With expertise in molecular genetics and functional genomics of natural products and functional food crops he currently manages the Australian Industrial Hemp Program of Research, leads two ARC Linkage projects on rice and hemp, coordinates a Coffee Variety Trial and contributes to projects on Macadamia and Tea Tree.
