Biography

Dr. Mahmudur Rahman currently works at the Analytical Research Laboratory (ARL) within Southern Cross Analytical Research Services (SCARS) at Southern Cross University. Previously, he served as a casual academic in Chemistry at the School of Environment, Science and Engineering (July 2019 - October 2021) and as a Visiting Researcher at Southern Cross Plant Science (June 2015 - May 2016). Dr. Rahman completed his PhD in February 2021 on seed proteomics, focusing on the traditional uses and allergenicity of rapeseed/Canola, under the supervision of Professor Bronwyn Barkla and Dr. Ben Liu. His thesis received high praise from external examiners. He has also worked as a Research Officer at Medicine & Health, University of New South Wales, and as an Assistant Professor at the Department of Pharmacy, Northern University Bangladesh (February 2007 - March 2015).

Research

Dr. Rahman’s research utilizes proteomics technologies to explore seed protein chemistry, food applications, and allergenicity, employing techniques such as 1D-SDS-PAGE-LC-MS/MS, Western blotting, 3D modeling, mass spectrometry, and HPLC analyses. His work also includes evaluating natural products for various biological activities, including antioxidant, antimicrobial, analgesic, cytotoxic, anti-inflammatory, neuropharmacological, and thrombolytic effects.

Community Engagement

Since November 2017, Dr. Rahman has volunteered with the UniMentor program and served as an Industry Mentor since 2021. He was a co-coordinator for the RISE Conference in 2018 and has volunteered during several crises, including the 2017 and 2022 floods, the 2019 bushfire recovery, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Rahman has also collaborated with local school parents and youth services. In recognition of his community service, he received the Southern Cross University Student Excellence Award in 2020.

Supervision

Dr. Rahman has supervised 44 undergraduate thesis students during his time at the Department of Pharmacy, Northern University Bangladesh. As a Visiting Researcher at Southern Cross Plant Science, he contributed to research supervision. Currently, he is a panel member for supervising undergraduate research students at the National Centre for Naturopathic Medicine at Southern Cross University under the Research Futures Scholarship Program 2024.

Teaching

Dr. Rahman has taught Chemistry at the undergraduate level at Southern Cross University's School of Environment, Science and Engineering. At the Department of Pharmacy, Northern University Bangladesh, he taught various subjects, including Natural Product Chemistry, Pharmacology, Medicinal Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Technology, Pharmaceutical Analysis, Microbiology, Human Physiology & Anatomy, and Chemistry.

Other

Dr. Rahman passed the Bangladesh Pharmacy Council registration examination in 2008. He is a member of the Australasian Grain Science Association, the Bangladesh Academy of Science, and the Committee of Action for Research, Extension & Services. Additionally, he reviews for reputable journals in food chemistry, protein chemistry, and pharmacology and serves as a Topical Advisory Panel Member for "Bioactives and Nutraceuticals" in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences.
