Biography
Associate Professor David Lloyd, came to Southern Cross University after ten years as a senior manager with the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority in Townsville. Dr. Lloyd has extensive community development experience, in areas ranging from remote aboriginal communities to the Solomon Islands, Indonesia, East Timor, Tonga, Tuvalu, Papua New Guinea and Fiji.
Research
Professor Dr. Lloyd is experienced in both qualitative and quantitative research techniques publishing on focus group findings based around landuse conflicts. He has also worked on a number of AusAID projects, recently completing a study of coffee and poverty in Timor-Leste and an ACIAR (Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research) Small Research Activity on ‘Using Apis mellifera and Apis cerana in landless and subsistence communities in Timor-Leste and Indonesia’ (AH/2015/002). Currently, Dr. Lloyd is working on a major project for ACIAR: ‘Increasing the productivity and profitability of smallholder beekeeping enterprises in PNG and Fiji’. This project aims to create opportunities for the participation of women and families in beekeeping, an area he feels strongly about. In response to an often over-simplified belief that beekeeping is a simple process of placing a hive near flowering plants and harvesting honey the project will develop and test appropriate technical, business and marketing practices, improve control of diseases that constrain production and trade of bees, honey and other bee products; finally, the project will build capacity of extension and development agencies to support beekeeping as a platform for sustainable small enterprises. Besides his passion for bees’ research (he has 80 hives of his own) Dr. Lloyd has a strong research interest in the incorporation of local/indigenous knowledge into natural area management. He wrote and produced “Saltwater People” for SBS, a documentary depicting the relationship of coastal Indigenous communities with their environment. Dr. Lloyd is also a highly experienced science communicator and has a weekly science and environment segment on ABC Radio.
Teaching
