Grade Point Average and GPA Calculator

Contents

The GPA is a numerical calculation that summarises your academic performance during a single study period or for the duration of your enrolment in your course. The GPA is recorded on your academic transcript and Australian Higher Education Graduate Statement (AHEGS).

Benefits of a high GPA are Honours selection, eligibility for admission to this institution and others, consideration for some academic prizes and the University medal; and bragging rights!

How is your GPA calculated

Grade points are assigned to a graded unit where:

  • High Distinction = 7
  • Distinction = 6
  • Credit = 5
  • Pass = 4
  • Fail; Absent Fail; Withdrawn Fail = 0

Grades not identified above and advanced standing are not included in grade point average calculations.

The formula to calculate your GPA is:

GPA = Sum of ( Grade Point x Credit Points ) Sum of ( Credit Points )

Credit Points is the number of points awarded for the completion of a unit (normally 12 per single-weighted unit). For more information please see Section 12 - Grade Point Average - Rule 3 - Coursework Awards - Student Assessment and Examinations.

GPA Calculator

The best way to find out your GPA is to log in to My Enrolment. However, this GPA calculator can help you work out what grades you need to attain to reach a specified GPA.

The calculatur updates its GPA automatically on the grades and credit points entered.

GPA calculation example 1

In their first year of study Student 1 is awarded 1 x Distinction, 2 x Credit and 5 x Pass grades for 8 single-weighted units (12 credit points each). Their GPA is calculated as follows:

Grade Point Credit Points Grade Points x Credit Points
Distinction (6)x12=72
Credit (5)x12=60
Credit (5)x12=60
Pass (4)x12=48
Pass (4)x12=48
Pass (4)x12=48
Pass (4)x12=48
Pass (4)x12=48
SUM Credit PointsSUM (Grade Points x Credit Points)
96432

To work out the Student 1's GPA multiply each Grade Point by its Credit Point and get the sum of the results, then divide that by the sum of the Credit Points. E.g.:

432 96 = 4.5 GPA

GPA calculation example 2

After completing their second year of study Student 2 has been awarded 1 x High Distinction, 4 x Credit and 9 x Pass and 1 x Fail grades for 15 single-weighted units (12 credit points each) and 1 Pass for a single double-weighted unit (24 credit points each). Their GPA is calculated as follows:

Grade Point Credit Points Grade Points x Credit Points
High Distinction (7)x12=84
Credit (5)x12=60
Credit (5)x12=60
Credit (5)x12=60
Credit (5)x12=60
Pass (4)x24=96
Pass (4)x12=48
Pass (4)x12=48
Pass (4)x12=48
Pass (4)x12=48
Pass (4)x12=48
Pass (4)x12=48
Pass (4)x12=48
Pass (4)x12=48
Fail (0)x12=0
SUM Credit PointsSUM (Grade Points x Credit Points)
192804

To work out Student 2's GPA multiply each Grade Point by its Credit Point and get the sum of the results, then divide that by the sum of the Credit Points. E.g.:

804 192 = 4.1875 GPA
