Professor Myers obtained a Naturopathic Diploma in 1982 from the Southern School of Natural Therapies and a medical degree from the University of Newcastle in 1991. His PhD was completed in 1999 which explored the effects of lyophilised garlic in pharmacologically modifiable cardiovascular risk factors. He was Foundation Head of the School of Natural and Complementary Medicine from 1995-2001 and still plays an active role within the Department. He is recognised internationally as a leader in complementary medicine education and research. Professor Myers has been extensively involved with naturopathic education at an undergraduate and postgraduate level in Australia since 1984. In 2004 he was awarded the prestigious Lady Cilento Award by the Complementary Healthcare Council for a sustained contribution to the field.
He was Professor and Director of the Australian Centre for Complementary Medicine Education and Research from 2001-2006 and is currently Professor and Director of NatMed-Research, the Natural and Complementary Medicine Research Unit within the Department of Natural and Complementary Medicine. He is actively engaged in research in herbal medicine, therapeutic foods and in public health issues in Complementary Medicine. He has attracted over six million dollars in research funding.
Professor Myers is a member of the Complementary Medicine Evaluation Committee of the Commonwealth Government, a statutory expert advisory committee to the Office of Complementary Medicines of the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) of the Australian Federal Department of Health. He has acted as consultant to industry, government and educational institutions on a broad range of issues involving natural medicine. He is a co-author of Government reviews on the practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Australia (1996) and on Naturopathy and Western Herbal Medicine (2005).
Professor Myers is a Medical editor of the Journal Digest published by the Journal of Complementary Medicine and is a member of the editorial panel of several national and international Complementary Medicine and Nutritional Journals. He is currently a senior editor of the American Naturopathic Foundations Project creating the definitive textbook on Naturopathic Medicine.
He has a wide portfolio of publications including books, book chapters, journal articles, research reports and invited presentations proceedings.
