Jo Kijas is a public historian and adjunct lecturer at Southern Cross University. Jo’s research and consultancies have been in environmental, community and regional history, specialising in oral history practice and methodology. She established the history major at SCU in 1995 before leaving the region in 2000. Her PhD was on a history of internal migration and place contestation in northern NSW. Since 2002 Jo has built her consultancy business, Kijas Histories, including eight published commissioned histories (with five National Trust and Museums & Galleries awards) and over twenty reports and articles. Working as part of a dynamic team on her return to the region, she was the historian who designed and developed content for the extensive Lismore City Council’s heritage interpretation walk ‘The Wilson River Story Sites’. For the past eight years Jo has been an adjunct professor at Capella University in the USA, supervising PhD students. She has continued unit development and casual teaching at SCU over the past 15 years, returning to internal teaching in 2015.
