I have been at this University since 1986, during which time I have been responsible for units in the disciplines of Auditing, Management and Financial Accounting, Accounting Theory. Prior to, and after obtaining my BBus degree in 1979 my work experience was gained in public practice and commerce, holding several accounting and management positions in Adelaide, Papua New Guinea and Sydney. My current CPA status with CPA Australia was granted in 1990. During 1990 and 1991 I studied full-time and obtained my MA in Accountancy. My thesis looked at the Annual Reporting Requirements of the Public Sector in Australia.
My service to the University has involved periods on the Student Union Board, Academic Programs Committee, Member of Academic Board, Member of Business Divisional Board, Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies (Business Faculty), Accounting programs student adviser, Liaison Person for the two professional accounting bodies (CPA Australia and ICAA), academic and administrative staff selection panels, business valedictory dinner co-ordinator, acting Dean, acting Head of School and member of the SCU Emerging Technologies Advisory Group.
I see my primary role as a lecturer. In 1993 and 1997 students voted me teacher of the year in the business program, something I take great pride in and seek to live up to. It is my duty to encourage students to learn and I carry a saying with me to remind students that the responsibility for knowledge lies with them - I am the facilitator.
Since 2001 I have been developing most of my unit delivery methods to be on-line and have been actively promoting this approach within SCU. My research interests currently lie in the area of on-line delivery of education to large and small groups, involving on and off-campus students. As well as numerous conference papers disseminating my practice, I have received institutional (2006), national (2007) and international (2008) teaching awards acknowledging my contribution in this area. I am currently working on an autoethnography for my PhD in an effort to share some of the things I have learned, and am still learning.
