First Year Experience

This questionnaire provides for feedback from first year undergraduate students on whether the experience overall is meeting their expectations, questions about the course, about University services and facilities, and about whether a student is considering changing course or discontinuing study.

Since 2004 the survey has been conducted each year, early in 2nd session (July-Aug).
Principal objectives
PopulationAll first year undergraduate students invited to complete the survey, (with the exception of those who have transferred from another course at the University).

Sampling process

All first year undergraduates issued with invitation by email, promotion of the survey is done via posters and an advert on MySCU, follow up emails are sent as reminders and also via SMS. (Since 2010 no hard copy survey forms have been sent).

Variables, measurement

The questions are scored on a five-point scale from 'strongly disagree' to 'strongly agree'. Questions on the course, and on services have two scales, one which relates to importance, and the other which relates to current performance. There is also an area for comment on positive aspects of the University and things that the University needs to change or improve.

Availability of data/reports

The survey has been conducted annually since 2004. Summary Reports are available for download in pdf format.

PDF First Year Experience Survey - Summary reports


Following analysis, reports are provided to members of the University Executive and senior managers. Reports of course level analysis are provided to course coordinators and Heads of Schools. The summary report is also provided to Academic Board. They are asked to report on action they have planned or taken to address critical comment.

Feedback to participants

Summary of results are published on MySCU, also follow up on action items from student feedback.
