Capturing the beauty of engineering: photo competition open - 15/03/2017
Intrigue, beauty and originality: ‘Beautiful Engineering’ is the theme of this year’s Southern Cross University Engineering Photo Competition which is now open to entries from around the country.
The 12 best photographs will appear in the 2018 Southern Cross University Engineering Calendar. Prizes will be awarded to the winner, highly commended and commended photographers.
Foundation Professor of Engineering Scott Smith said the judges were looking for entries that captured an artistic aspect or displayed an element of intrigue, originality or a striking engineering observation.
“Around the world, engineering offers an array of photographic opportunities that tell a story. Of course, engineering is very practical and functional in its application, but there can be great beauty too. That’s what we are hoping to catch through this Photo Competition,” said Professor Smith.
The Southern Cross University Engineering Photo Competition was established in 2013 to increase interest in engineering and the built environment.
“The competition enables us all to stop and look at things in our built environment in a different way,” Professor Smith said.
“The competition is open to the general public. It’s a great way we can embrace the community as part of our University.”
The number of entries in the biennial competition has continued to grow since its inception.
“The quality of images in the past competitions has been very high and we have displayed many of the images as framed art and on windows within the Engineering facilities at the University," said Professor Smith.
"This year, the quality looks to be no different, with some unique and interesting shots already submitted for judging.”
The competition closes May 31 2017. Read the terms and conditions.
Visit the School of Environment, Science and Engineering Facebook page to see a selection of images. The winning, highly commended and commended images will be posted on 30 June.
