Ajit Kumar Ngangbam finished his undergraduate degree at the College of Fisheries Science, Central Agricultural University, Imphal, India. He has double master degree; the first master degree was pursued from College of Fisheries, Mangalore, India. The second master degree was completed at the Ghent University, Belgium and Evora University, Portugal. He joined Southern Cross University in April 2013 under a Molluscan PhD Scholarship. Recently, he was awarded an APA and IPRS for his PhD research. His PhD research project is to study the "Putative role of bacterial symbionts in the biosynthetic origin of Tyrian purple in Dicathais orbita, a Muricidae mollusc". His project aims to establish the biosynthetic origin and identify the genes involved in the biosynthesis of bromoindole derivatives in muricid molluscs. His project has substantial implications for sustainable production of Tyrian purple and anticancer compounds, and will also help to determine the potential role of symbiotic bacteria in the biosynthesis of Tyrian purple precursors. His PhD research project involves a combination of marine microbiology, genomics and bioinformatics work. His research interest areas are microbiology and biotechnology.
