Research Summary

Salome Rangel GonzalezTopic Research: The past is a window into the future: coral records impending environmental trajectories.

Supervisor: Supervisors: Leslie Christidis, Sander Scheffers and Dirk Erler.

A key to explain the occurrence of Coral reefs (highly productive communities) in low nutrient waters could be the understanding of nitrogen cycling. The paradox of these "oases of diversity" can be explained by the existence of very efficient mechanisms of nutrient recycling between the zooxanthellae and the coral, and by the input of new nitrogen through bacterial fixation. In this sense, measurements of δ15N composition of organic material (OM) trapped within the coral skeleton can provide valuable information to understand the dynamics of nitrogen. It is unclear whether temporal and/or spatial changes in δ15N-OM are consequence of changes in N sources, changes in the nutritional status of the coral, or changes in the diet of the corals. That is the reason why the N track must be analysed in junction with other sources of environmental information. Recently, the measurements of δ15N in specific amino acids (δ15N-AA) has show applications to establish trophic level of the AA sources and, analyses with other geochemical proxies, can be a promising tool to reconstruct past N cycling on coral reefs.

Salome Rangel Gonzalez The principal aims of my research topic are i) to develop and standardize techniques to analyse δ15N-AA in coral skeletons; ii) to compare the fraction of bulk δ15N and δ15N-AA between coral skeletons, coral tissue and zooxanthellae using experiments in aquaria under controlled conditions; iii) to trace the bulk δ15N and δ15N-AA in fossil corals in junction with other geochemical proxies such as Sr/Ca, δ18O, 14C, luminescence and growth characteristics of the coral skeletons; iv) to establish temporal and spatial comparisons of the bulk δ15N and δ15N-AA between fossil and modern corals from different localities; and v) to model the spatial and temporal nitrogen behaviour on coral reefs and impact on its growth patterns.
