A former waitress, Tanietta decided she wanted a better life for herself and her four teenagers when she embarked on an Indigenous Studies degree, majoring in Trauma and Healing.

"I chose Trauma and Healing because I had experienced many types of trauma in my life. I wanted to engage in healing, not only for me but for my family and my community. And the healing was genuine. It lifted my life back up. I was able to support my children and be a really good role model for them which changed the way they looked at me and changed our relationship. The degree changed my life, it really did."

Tanietta said SCU's Bachelor of Indigenous Studies was one of a kind.

"It mixes Westernised counselling, psychology, anatomy and physiology with culturally appropriate units, like cultural counselling and Indigenous spiritual ways of looking at things.

"My work these days is very different to washing dishes and serving food. It has a deeper integrity. It's powerful to watch other people change as you help them see the benefits of education."
