Research interests/background

Peter has worked as a research scientist on soil and water management issues related to agricultural production for 30 years. The research problems he has addressed include:

  • Irrigation using saline-sodic groundwater
  • Limiting groundwater recharge from rice
  • Reducing acid export to water ways from acid sulphate soils
  • Field assessment of crop tolerance to soil salinity and acidity
  • Assessing arsenic movement from contaminated sites
  • Quantifying ground water recharge using solute movement models
  • Assessment of soil salinity using electromagnetic induction and laboratory methods
  • Modelling plant water use in the presence of saline groundwater
  • Field assessment of plant water use in saline soils with shallow water tables
  • Modelling effects of river floods on vegetation health
  • Use of organic amendments including biochars to improve soil fertility and sequester carbon
  • Soil nutrient management to reduce groundwater contamination
  • Remediation of tsunami affected agricultural land
  • Erosion research in macadamia orchards

In recent years Peter has been leading a number of development aid projects in Indonesia and Vietnam for the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research.

  • Building more profitable and resilient farming systems in Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam and NSW. (ACIAR, 2008-2013)
  • Restoring fertility and annual cropping to tsunami affected soils in Aceh, Indonesia.(ACIAR. 2006-2008)
  • Management of soil fertility to restore cropping in tsunami affected areas of Aceh, Indonesia. (ACIAR 2005)
  • Opportunities to improve the sustainable utilisation of water and soil resources for coastal agriculture in Vietnam and Australia (ACIAR 2012-2013)
  • Improving the utilisation of water and soil resources for tree crop production in coastal areas of Vietnam and NSW. (ACIAR 2007-2011).
  • Impact of climate change on coastal floodplain geochemistry and water quality. (ARC linkage project with Southern Cross University through Centre for Coastal Agricultural Landscapes).
  • Improving orchard floor management in Macadamias (HAL, 2005-9).
  • Hydrologic effects of floodgate management on coastal agriculture (LWA 1999-2003)
  • Environmental fate of Arsenic at cattle dip sites. (Cattle tick program 1998-2000)
