Research interests / background

Ed Burton's research examines iron, sulfur and trace element geochemistry in soils/sediments through field studies, laboratory experiments and modelling. His research findings have application in preserving and improving water quality and in the rehabilitation of degraded landscapes. In recent years, Ed's research has focussed on iron-sulfur transformations under changing redox conditions and the associated effects on arsenic and trace metal mobility. This includes investigations on:

  • Contemporary sulfur biomineralisation in acid sulfate soils - Unravelling the controls on in-situ formation and speciation of iron sulfides (such as mackinawite) in acid sulfate soils.
  • Reductive iron transformations in soils/sediments - Understanding the pathways by which nanoparticulate iron minerals (such as schwertmannite) transform under changing environmental conditions in soils and sediments.
  • The environmental geochemistry of arsenic and trace metals - Resolving the coupled relationship between iron-sulfur biomineralisation and the mobility of arsenic and trace metals in acid-sulfate soils and estuarine sediments.
  • Oxidative geochemistry of iron-monosulfide minerals - Quantifying the kinetics, reaction pathways and water quality implications of iron-monosulfide oxidation in acid-sulfate soils and estuarine sediments.
  • Biogeochemical cycling in coastal wetlands - Multidisciplinary studies on coastal floodplain wetland biogeochemistry and surface water quality.
