Teaching at NMSC
Through the School of Environment, Science and Engineering, the National Marine Science Centre (NMSC) hosts a range of undergraduate, honours and postgraduate courses.
Bachelor of Marine Science and Management
After completing two years of the Bachelor of Marine Science and Management course in Lismore, students attend specialised marine units that cover topics such as ocean systems, global climate change, marine pollution and marine ecosystem management, which are taught intensively in three-week blocks at the NMSC in Coffs Harbour. The first week is allocated to independent study, where students read key materials relating to the subject area that they are studying. The second week is a face-to-face teaching week that includes a range of activities such as lectures, tutorials, short field trips and practical work. The third week is devoted to completing assignments.
Students may also choose to complete the unit, Coral Reefs on the Edge. This unit integrates the material taught throughout the final year and involves an extended field trip to coral reef sites in the Great Barrier Reef.
Bachelor of Environmental Science/Marine Science and Management
The four-year full-time combined degree, Bachelor of Environmental Science/Marine Science and Management, brings together the terrestrial aspects of environmental management with marine science and management. It aims to produce graduates who can manage the environment for future generations. The fourth-year units are studied at the NMSC.
Honours degrees are a fourth year of directed independent study available to students who demonstrate a meritorious performance in their undergraduate studies. The Honours degree may be a completion point for students who want to focus on an area of marine science and management and improve their employment prospects. Alternatively, Honours may provide a starting point for entry into postgraduate studies. Further details can be found at Bachelor of Science with Honours
Postgraduate degrees can be completed by research, coursework or a combination of the two approaches. The Master of Marine Science and Management by coursework is a popular option for those wishing to upgrade their qualifications and develop specialist skills. NMSC staff are able to supervise both Masters and Doctor of Philosophy students on a wide range of topics such as biodiversity, ecological interactions, aquaculture and sustainable fisheries.
