Activity Description
BridgeStudents build a small bridge from balsa, pins, tape, paddle pop sticks etc. Points are awarded for strength and load-carrying capacity (tested with dynamic loads).
CatapultStudents build a catapult that can fire a tennis ball accurately over a long distance. At the end of the session, teams will be given a projectile and their catapults will be tested for distance and accuracy on the firing range.
ElectraCITYStudents must make a profit by providing electricity to as much of the city's infrastructire as possible at the lowest possible cost. Your team will have an ElectraCITY board, a batter and a few cables to start with.
Grasping at StrawsStudents are required to design, build and use a 'bionic hand' built fromPVC pipe, string, straws, and timber coffee stirrers. Each group willthen assess the effectiveness of their construction in several tests.
Helter Skelter Shelter Students construct a tall earthquake-proof tower using only basic materials, sound engineering principles, and ingenuity. At the end of the session the towers are put to the test on an earthquake simulator.
Mission to Mars Students construct a vehicle from materials provided to transverse an undulating surface. Students will use rubber bands to provide the tension for the suspension system. Note: This is a wet weather activity.
Confounding CommunicationsStudents construct a small hovercraft from motorised propulsion units, Styrofoam, balsa, plastic and tape. Scoring is based on manoeuvrability, speed, and ability to negotiate obstacles.
Flat Pack The aim of this half-day activity is to develop networks to join a series of points in the most efficient way possible. The higher the efficiency of linkage the more points your team earns.
